4 questions to ask if you're outgrowing your job

September 12, 20242 min read

There is a lot of stigma around career pivots. I still hear people worried about having less than 1 year experience on their resume, or worried they should stay for that next promotion or title change.

I’ve had an average tenure of about 2 years at a job.

The truth is I had my reasons every time. And it's because I dared to ask these questions.

Now, let’s talk about the only four questions I asked before leaving a job.

Thinking Through questions image

1️⃣ "Am I still growing, learning, and feeling challenged?"

If the answer is no, perhaps it is time to look for new opportunities. Before moving on I make sure to express to my manager that I want something more. Then I assess if I am asking for feedback and getting the support I need? If not, it’s a red flag.

2️⃣ "Is my environment conducive to my growth?"

Do you have a supportive manager who pushes you? How are your team dynamics?? Is your organization tackling exciting and innovative projects?

If not, it’s another red flag ❌. Remember to create a checklist of your nonnegotiable so you can map out what you want in your next role.

3️⃣ "Does the work connect to my values?"

It might seem like a luxury to have a job that aligns with your values but when your values align with your work, you will feel fulfilled even if the work is hard.

It’s OK if your values have changed and you no longer feel aligned. A company may say "We have a work-life balance” but, in reality, everyone is a workaholic. Choose a company that lives by its values.

4️⃣ "What's my plan if this doesn't work out?"

Give yourself a timeline and reassess as needed. You may have more or less tolerance for risk and can take a sabbatical or explore while still working.

For example, “I’ll stick this out for the next 6 months doing X, if I see no change I will pivot my strategy to Y”

Remember, you can drive your career!  Next time you feel like exploring new opportunities, ask yourself these questions first. Then make your move.
